Identity – A Measure of One’s Own Self
Abstract
Identity is not merely a reflection of one’s name, role, or social status—it is the essence of one’s being. Throughout human civilization, from the Iron Age to modern times, identity has served as both a compass and a mirror. It has defined how individuals influence others and how masses often mould themselves according to those who lead. From tribal heads and monarchs to today’s political figures, founders of companies, family heads, and even divine creation—identity has been a central force shaping human behavior, culture, and destiny. This thesis explores how identity manifests through leadership and influence, how people often suppress their uniqueness to fit into another’s definition of identity, and finally, why reclaiming and building one’s own self is the truest tribute to the uniqueness with which the universe has created us.
1. From Iron Age to Influence – The First Reflection of Identity
In the earliest forms of human civilization—especially during the Iron Age—tribes and groups emerged as the core unit of survival and community. Each of these groups had a leader, whose personality, preferences, decisions, and beliefs formed the unwritten rulebook for the tribe. It was this leader’s identity that shaped the group’s conduct, values, and direction.
The followers, often lacking agency or clarity of self, conformed—voluntarily or by necessity. This ancient practice seeded a long-standing tradition: the identity of one becomes the standard for many. This initial reflection of identity as power and influence has echoed ever since in various human structures.
2. King and Kingdom – One Man’s Identity as a Nation’s Culture
History is painted with tales of kings whose identities defined the culture, governance, art, and ethos of entire kingdoms. The kingdom was, in essence, an extended mirror of the king’s personality.
Be it Ashoka’s transformation towards Buddhism, Akbar’s policy of tolerance or Aurangzeb’s orthodoxy—every decision reflected identity first, policy second. Citizens may or may not have aligned with the king’s ideals, yet the pressure to conform was immense. This historical truth reinforces the idea that individual identity at the top cascades down as collective behaviour, often suppressing diversity for unity.
3. Modern Democracy – The Nation Follows the Identity of Its Elected Leader
In the current age, the elected leader is the symbolic and functional reflection of a nation’s personality. Whether it’s a progressive outlook or a conservative stance, the identity of the nation’s top leader becomes its brand on the global stage.
Policies, international relations, cultural positioning, and national priorities are often less about consensus and more about the leader’s ideology. As seen across nations, the citizens are recognized globally through the lens of their leader’s identity—irrespective of individual belief or alignment.
4. Founders and Enterprises – Organizations Born from Identity
Every visionary founder creates more than a business—they create an extension of their own identity. A startup or organization embodies the thoughts, energy, emotions, ethics, and vision of the founder.
The mission, culture, and processes are often dictated by the identity of that one person, and the team aligns accordingly. Employees, whether in agreement or not, gradually absorb and adapt to that identity for the sake of alignment, growth, and often survival.
5. The Family Mirror – Identity of the Head as the Culture of the Home
At a microcosmic level, the family unit follows the same principle. The head of the family—usually the one controlling resources and decisions—sets the tone.
Their identity shapes rules, lifestyle, emotional behavior, financial decisions, and even dreams of other members. The rest may hold differing opinions, desires, or capabilities, yet often suppress those in order to align with the identity of the “head.” In doing so, many individuals within a family begin to live lives disconnected from their true self.
6. Cosmic Identity – You Were Built to Be Unique
Beyond societal structures lies a spiritual truth: each individual is handcrafted with uniqueness. No two fingerprints are the same, and no two minds are identical. The Universe does not create duplicates. Your identity—your combination of thoughts, passions, abilities, and dreams—is a purpose in motion.
Suppressing it to suit someone else’s vision is not just a loss—it’s a betrayal of the very cosmic design. You were built with intentional individuality to fulfill a mission only you can complete.
7. Conclusion – The Tragic Trade-off of Identity
From the Iron Age to the digital era, history shows that individuals often trade their identity for alignment, survival, or belonging. The few who retain and build their own identity become leaders, while the majority lose themselves within someone else’s story.
Whether it’s societal pressure, family expectations, organizational culture, or political ideology—the result is the same: the individual fades, and a borrowed identity thrives.
8. Way Forward – Are You Building Yourself?
The question stands strong—are you building your own self or merely playing a role in someone else’s script? What stops you from asserting your individuality? Why should your happiness, wisdom, desires, and talent be dimmed to amplify someone else’s glory?
The world doesn’t need more copies. It needs the real YOU—the thinker, the creator, the innovator, the nurturer, the rebel, or the believer. There’s no shame in being you. The shame lies in hiding it.
9. Build Yourself – You Owe It to the Universe
Let your intelligence, feelings, ideas, and passions flow freely. Embrace your identity not as an act of rebellion, but as a tribute to your creation. The universe built you with your own mind for a reason—so build a better you.
Be the head of your own story. Build a vision aligned with your truth. Let your identity be a lighthouse—not a shadow. The time is now to reclaim, rebuild, and reintroduce the YOU the world needs.

Loved the thesis Manoj… beautifully expressed.
My take is:
Identity is not merely a label we wear; it is the compass by which we navigate the world and the mirror through which we see ourselves. It is both deeply personal and profoundly social, sculpted by history, culture, and collective memory. From the primitive tools of the Stone Age to the curated profiles of the digital age, identity has always been at the heart of human evolution.
